International Virtual Quilt Exhibition
Monday, 11 September 2023
Six years ago Old Girl Daena Schofield started quilting, slowly moving away from traditional quilts to making art quilts. Last year she created a piece called 'Experiencing Epilepsy' and it has gone on to win awards at both local and national levels. Now it has been selected to be part of an international virtual exhibition 'Imprisoned' that will be released on the Studio Art Quilt Associates website on 1 October. Daena is the only Artist from New Zealand/Oceania as the majority are from USA, Canada, Europe and the UK.

This is Daena's Artist Statement:
A representation of what I go through when I have a major epileptic seizure. During my seizures I am terrified and unable to communicate what I see and sense; i.e. that my entire universe is blowing up with explosions of light and colour. This is caused by a misfire or surge in the normal activity of the neuron cells in my brain. In the aftermath, I will be crying, confused, exhausted and headachy. It is terrifying to be trapped in a prison of my brain's own making.

We congratulate Daena on this wonderful recognition of her art and for her stunningly beautiful depiction of something that is so terrifying for her.
