Marsden Old Girls Represented on the King's Birthday Honours List 2024

We are proud to highlight the incredible achievements of two of our Marsden Old Girls who have recently been appointed to The New Zealand Order of Merit: Ms. Gemma New: For Services to Music Direction Ms. Gemma New is celebrated for her contributions to the classical music world, holding prominent positions with orchestras across North America and New Zealand. Beginning her career with the Christchurch Youth Orchestra, Ms. New has served as Music Director of the Hamilton Philharmonic in Ontario, Principal Guest Conductor for the Dallas Symphony, and Resident Conductor for the St. Louis Symphony. In 2022, she made history as the first woman Artistic Advisor and Principal Conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. With experience conducting over 50 top orchestras globally and performing at prestigious venues like the Hollywood Bowl and Lincoln Center, Ms. New is renowned for her dedication to highlighting contemporary composers. Her commitment extends beyond conducting to mentoring, masterclasses, and community engagements. Professor Fiona Margaret Alpass: For Services to Health Psychology and Seniors Professor Fiona Alpass has co-led the Health and Ageing Research Team (HART) at Massey University since 2006. Her work on the New Zealand Health, Work and Retirement Study has tracked the experiences of over 1,000 New Zealanders aged 55 and over for 18 years, gaining international recognition. Professor Alpass has significantly advanced the field of ageing through her research on organisational psychology and workforce ageing, and she has been instrumental in mentoring the next generation of researchers. She has contributed her expertise to national advisory groups and international research programmes, notably enhancing our understanding of senior entrepreneurship and ageing.
